USPTOの決定によると、取り消しの根拠となったのは、コナミが2002年に取得した「Yabe」特許や、任天堂自身が2020年に取得した「Taura」特許など、複数の既存特許です。特に、任天堂の「Taura」特許と、任天堂の「Motokura」特許（2022年取得）またはコナミの「Yabe」特許を組み合わせると、今回の特許の26の請求のうち18件が無効になるとしています。さらに、バンダイナムコが2020年に取得した「Shimomoto」特許を組み合わせることで、残りの8件も無効になる「不足しているリンク」が補完されると説明されています。この特許は『ポケットモンスター』シリーズを念頭に置いたものと見られますが、『ピクミン』など他の多くのゲームにも適用されうる広範な内容でした。もしこの特許が有効なままであれば、他社が召喚メカニクスを採用するゲームを開発する際に、任天堂から訴訟を起こされる可能性があり、『ペルソナ』シリーズなどの将来のタイトルにも影響が及ぶと懸念されていました。しかし、今回の取り消しにより、そのような懸念は一時的に払拭されることになりそうです。
